Tony Todd: A Towering Icon of Horror and Cinema

Anthony Tiran Todd, better known as Tony Todd, came into the world on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C. A proud American, he grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, raised by his mom, Evetta Lyons Gaither. From a young age, he was hooked on stories and performing—passions that would shape his incredible journey in the spotlight.

Early Life and Education

Tony Todd spent his childhood in Hartford, where he went to Hartford Public High School. Later, he got involved with the Artists Collective, Inc., a local arts group that helped spark his creative fire. Hungry to sharpen his skills, he studied at the University of Connecticut before landing scholarships to dive into theater at the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute and the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island. Those years built the groundwork for the actor he’d become.

Personal Life

Tony Todd married Fatima Cortez, and together they raised two kids, Alexander and Ariana. Standing at an impressive 6’5” with a voice that could shake a room, he was a gentle giant off-screen—full of kindness and always ready to lend a hand. He stayed tight with his family and loved talking about guiding others and giving back to the folks around him.

A Career Spanning Genres and Generations

Tony Todd’s acting days kicked off in the mid-’80s with a role as Sergeant Warren in Oliver Stone’s Platoon (1986). Even in that small part, he showed he could dig deep into a character. But it was playing Ben in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead that really put him on the horror map. He hit the big time in 1992 as the star of Candyman, based on Clive Barker’s The Forbidden. As Daniel Robitaille—a ghost with a heartbreaking past—Todd mixed terror with soul in a way that stuck with you. His rumbling voice and big presence turned him into a legend on screen. Candyman spawned three sequels, and he came back for each one, even the 2021 reboot. Todd didn’t just stick to scary stuff, though. He popped up in The Crow (1994), The Rock (1996), and played William Bludworth in the Final Destination series (2000–2025), where folks figured he might just be Death himself. On TV, he left his mark in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and The Flash, where he growled as the bad guy Zoom. His voice was a goldmine too. He brought Darkseid to life in DC animated flicks and gave Venom some serious edge in the 2023 game Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, earning heaps of praise. On stage, he was the first to play King Hedley II in August Wilson’s play, showing off his theater chops.
