Early Life and Beginnings

James Lee Williams, known professionally as The Vivienne, was born on April 12, 1992, in Colwyn Bay, Wales. From a young age in the UK, Williams cultivated a love for performance and fashion.

The Birth of The Vivienne

At the age of 16, Williams moved to Liverpool to pursue a career as a makeup artist. His love of drag blossomed in that lively city. Williams discovered his true calling after a night of watching drag queens perform. He adopted the stage name “The Vivienne,” inspired by his admiration for the iconic British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. This choice reflected Williams’ commitment to high-end fashion and his desire to stand out in the drag world.

Rise to Stardom

The Vivienne’s career took off in 2015 when they were named the UK Drag Ambassador for the American reality show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” This recognition set the stage for their future success. In 2019, The Vivienne competed in and won the first season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK,” cementing their status as one of Britain’s top drag performers. Their victory was marked by exceptional comedy skills, particularly their spot-on impersonation of Donald Trump, which became one of the most memorable moments in the show’s history.

Career Achievements and Impact

Following their “Drag Race UK” win, The Vivienne’s career soared to new heights. They competed in the seventh season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” in 2022, becoming the only non-U.S. winner invited to participate. This opportunity showcased The Vivienne’s talent on a global stage. Beyond drag competitions, they ventured into musical theater, portraying the Wicked Witch of the West in a UK and Irish tour of “The Wizard of Oz.” The Vivienne also made history as the first drag performer to compete on “Dancing on Ice” in 2023, finishing as a finalist.

Personal Life

In 2019, The Vivienne married David Ludford, sharing their personal happiness alongside their professional success. This union was a celebration of love and acceptance, reflecting the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.

Legacy and Final Days

Tragically, The Vivienne’s bright star dimmed too soon. James Lee Williams passed away on January 5, 2025, at their home in Chorlton-by-Backford, Cheshire, at the age of 32. The cause of death was not disclosed, respecting the family’s privacy during their time of grief. The Vivienne’s impact on the drag community and popular culture was immense. They were known not just for their stunning looks and performances, but also for their wit, warmth, and ability to connect with audiences. The Vivienne broke barriers, bringing drag into mainstream entertainment and inspiring countless others to embrace their authentic selves. In the words of The Vivienne, shared during their “Drag Race UK” finale, “I think being an amazing performer is great, but I think being relatable to the average person in the street is far more endearing than having every skill under the sun. I might not have every skill, but I’ve got the skill to make people feel comfortable in their own skin.” The Vivienne’s legacy lives on through their groundbreaking performances, advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, and the countless lives they touched with their artistry and kindness. They will be remembered as a pioneer who helped redefine drag for a new generation, leaving an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.
