His name was later changed by his father to Martin Luther in honor of the German reformer Martin Luther.

Experiences with Racism During Childhood

King’s childhood was filled with racism and discrimination. He was once asked to give up his seat on a bus to a white person when he was 14.

Educational Journey

King started his educational journey at Morehouse College, where he went for high school. But before Morehouse College, King attended segregated public schools as a gifted student. He enrolled at Boston University, where he earned a Ph.D. in systematic theology in 1955.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott

King gained prominence in 1955 when he led the Montgomery bus boycott, a campaign to end racial segregation on public transportation.
