Early Life and Education

Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in Chiaravalle, Italy, into a family of intellectuals. Her father was an accountant, and her mother was also highly educated, which was unusual for women at the time. At the age of six, her family moved to Rome, where she began her formal education at a local state school.

Pioneering Path in Medicine

Maria Montessori was determined to break gender barriers in a male-dominated field. She decided to pursue medicine, becoming the first woman to obtain a medical degree from the University of Rome in 1896. Her work as a physician in psychiatric clinics sparked her interest in the education of children with mental and physical disabilities. She applied innovative approaches to their care, focusing on holistic development, marking her transition from medicine to education.

Maria Montessori Founding the Casa dei Bambini

In 1907, Maria Montessori opened her first school, the *Casa dei Bambini* (Children’s House), in a poor neighborhood in Rome. The school catered to children aged three to six and was built around Montessori’s child-centric educational philosophy. She believed that children had an innate desire to learn and created an environment that fostered independence, concentration, and self-discipline through freedom and structured guidance.

The Montessori Method Gains Global Recognition

Maria Montessori’s innovative methods quickly gained attention and spread worldwide. As her approach was applied to a variety of age groups, including elementary and secondary students, Montessori traveled extensively to train teachers and establish schools around the globe. Her philosophy emphasized learning through exploration and matching activities to the developmental stages and interests of each child.

In addition to establishing schools and training educators, Maria Montessori authored several influential books on education. Her work earned her three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. Maria Montessori passed away in 1952 at the age of 81, but her educational methods continue to thrive and are used in Montessori schools around the world today.
