Gabi Novak was an emblem of grace, emotional honesty, and artistic integrity. Her warm, expressive voice carried across decades, bridging pop and jazz, leaving a mark on generations of listeners. In every note, she told a story of life’s joys, sorrows, and subtle beauty.

Born Gabrijela Novak on July 8, 1936, in Berlin, Gabi was the child of a Croatian father and a German mother. Her early years unfolded against the turbulence of World War II. After her father died when she was a child, she spent parts of her upbringing on the idyllic Croatian island of Hvar with her grandparents, finding solace and a sense of stability. Later, she settled in Zagreb, where the foundation for her artistic future was laid.

Education: Art Before Music

In Zagreb, Gabi pursued her artistic instincts at the School of Applied Arts, where she majored in graphics. After graduation, she worked as an illustrator at an animation studio, even lending her voice to animated characters. These early experiences shaped her aesthetic sensibilities, giving her performances a refined, almost painterly quality that would later define her stage presence.

Rising Star: Launching Her Singing Career

By the late 1950s, Gabi’s musical talent was being noticed. She was invited to perform with prominent jazz ensembles, a major step into the jazz world. One of her earliest breakthroughs came when she shared the stage with international jazz legends, solidifying her reputation as a singer with extraordinary depth and range. Her first major recognition came at a prominent music festival, where her performance revealed a voice that was at once elegant, expressive, and deeply emotive.

Career: From Pop Diva to Jazz Luminary

Over the 1960s, Gabi Novak became a household name in Yugoslavia. Her voice resonated with audiences far beyond the jazz scene, blending sophistication and accessibility. Together, they created some of the most memorable songs in Croatian music history, combining lyrical intimacy with musical sophistication.

Gabi was known for her artistic integrity, often carefully selecting material and declining opportunities that required compromising her identity. Her careful curation of songs allowed her to maintain a distinctive voice in the music scene. Even decades into her career, she continued to earn awards and accolades, highlighting her lasting influence.

Personal Life: Love, Elegance, Resilience

Gabi’s personal life reflected the same grace that defined her music. After an early marriage ended, she found a lasting partnership with Arsen Dedić. Their union spanned decades and included a deep creative collaboration. Their son, Matija Dedić, followed in their artistic footsteps as a jazz pianist. Gabi balanced family life with her career, and even in the face of personal loss and grief, she remained dignified, resilient, and deeply committed to her art.
